NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND SYMPOSIUM GOAL

The focus of this year’s symposium is to update the psychiatric, medical and mental health communities on key issues in patient management.

The majority of mental health services are delivered in the primary care setting, where depression and anxiety are among the conditions most commonly diagnosed.  Sleep disturbances are a very common concern among practitioners of all disciplines.  Of even greater concern is the fact that there are many persons suffering from sleep disorders who never receive treatment. This activity will offer practitioners new available treatment options.

Finally, the systematic study of the relationship between female reproductive biology and risk for mood disturbance in childbearing women as well as in peri and postmenopausal women has recently received increasing attention.  With additional knowledge, physicians will be better able to identify these patients and the most appropriate therapeutic interventions will minimize the morbidity and suffering associated with affective disorders.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Define the pathophysiology of depression
  • Evaluate the role of neurotransmitters of depression
  • Compare the pharmacology of the classes of antidepressants and their side effects
  • Identify the pharmacologic treatment options for acute and chronic insomnia
  • Review strategies for the management of insomnia in special populations
  • Diagnose sleep disorder patients
  • Explain the evolving concept of sleep maintenance
  • Recognize that depression and anxiety are common comorbidities
  • Identify the pharmaceutical agents with activity in addressing anxiety disorders and other medical comorbidities
